Finding help for addicts — as well as family members — getting easier

“When Cathy Schillaci discovered that her son was addicted to opioids, she quickly scrambled to find help for him and support for herself. The search didn’t go well for the Rome resident. She called treatment centers, but no one could take him, at least not right away. Eventually, her son was arrested for burglary, stealing to feed his addiction, Schillaci said. He’s now serving six to seven years in state prison.”

WANTED: SPEAKERS FOR THE STOP DWI VICTIMS IMPACT PANEL (VIP)

The Oneida County STOP- DWI PROGRAM is in need of speakers for its VICTIMS IMPACT PANEL (VIP). The VIP is a court mandated sentencing initiative which depicts the real picture of what driving while intoxicated can cause. Victims such as relatives, friends, or first responders of drunk driving crashes can speak directly to sentenced DWI offenders in a court like setting. The goal is to impact the defendant’s attitude and behavior by showing the pain that someone’s decision to drink and drive has caused.

If you are a victim of a DWI incident and are interested in becoming a speaker for the upcoming Victims Impact Panel please contact Tom Giruzzi at the Oneida County STOP DWI office at 315.736.8945, or stopdwi@ocgov.net.
